Section D: Give a long answer to the question given below.

34.B.i. What happens when a small piece of sodium is dropped in ethanol ? Write the equation for this reaction.
ii. Why is glacial acetic acid called so ?

i. When a small piece of sodium is dropped into ethanol, a reaction occurs where sodium reacts with ethanol to produce and hydrogen gas. This reaction is and releases hydrogen gas, which may catch fire due to the heat of the reaction.

The balanced chemical equation for this reaction is: \(2C_2H_5OH\) + \(2Na\) → \(2C_2H_5ONa\) + \(H_2\)↑

ii. Glacial acetic acid is called so because it is the anhydrous (water-free) form of acetic acid and solidifies into crystals just below room temperature at about 16.7°C (62°F). The term "glacial" refers to the appearance of its solid form.
